What is Employment Discrimination?

Under California law, everyone has the right to a work environment that is free of discrimination. Employers cannot treat you unfairly because of characteristics like your race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or ethnicity. Employment discrimination can include actions like refusing to hire you, paying you less than comparable employees, denying you medical and other types leave, or creating a work environment filled with harassment.

The California Civil Rights Department (CRD) helps make sure Californians are protected from discrimination at work by investigating, mediating, and prosecuting complaints, as well as conducting training of employees and employers.
